Or abracadabra!
Or wha-la!
Or thank you.
It's not even cheese. *gasp*
What is this magical word that makes everything awesome?
Yup. That's the one.
True principle--whether in our personal lives, the countries we live in, the homes we have established. This is why I keep a journal--trying to reinforce memories so I won't make the same mistakes again and again.
The awesome co-hosts for the September 3 posting of the IWSG are Kim Lajevardi, Natalie Aguirre, Nancy Gideon, and Diedre Knight!
September 3 question: What are your thoughts on using AI, such as GPChat, Raptor, and others with your writing? Would you use it for research, storybible, or creating outlines\beats?
Here's where I admit I use it. Not for outlining. Not for story bible. I like AI for inspirational image generation, research assistance, and when my brain occasionally struggles with rephrasing a sentence, I really LOVE getting a few suggestions. (Normally, I'd go to a critique partner for this.)
What about you? Do you use AI regularly? What for? And how do you keep your memories?
It is good for those things, suggestions that we can make better.
ReplyDeleteAnd why focus on bad stuff? Give it to God. He can handle it much better.
100%. Life is too short to get caught on the sad/hard stuff.
DeleteI journal too. Though many people only write the bad things in there, I always find time to write the good. And ofc, photographs are great to keep memories:)
ReplyDeleteHave a great September!
It's the way to go! Holding onto our memories is so important.
DeleteKeep going back tot he good stuff.
ReplyDeleteEspecially when times get difficult.
DeleteIt sounds like you have good ways to use Al as a tool. I practice gratitude too, though I don't write it in a journal. It's really helped me feel better about my life since Rudy died.
ReplyDeleteI think you're an especially good example of that, Natalie. You inspire me.
DeleteI read a book years ago called Writing as a Way of Healing, that talked about how to use journaling and other kinds of writing as a type of therapy. I've gone back to it many times and it can really help.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I've been blabbering about this all morning, but you phrased it the way the way I've been trying to: AI can be used a critique partner, or writing partner. I've used it that way myself and it's wonderful. It's great if you have a real person, but that's not always an option.
Yes! My journal is definitely a way to explore thoughts and feelings in a healthy way.
DeleteIt's true, when in a pinch, AI will work for feedback.
You can even ask it craft advice (ex: 'List ways to make a villain in a novel more multidimensional'). It will give you general suggestions that you can adapt to your story.
ReplyDeleteLove the shirt! I want one, too.
Thanks for visiting my blog. :)
Yes! It's true.
DeleteBest. Shirt. Ever!
One of the worst things about getting older is not being able to Remember… I forget where I put things, then I forget what I was looking for. =D I must write everything down or you can fugetaboutit! But most annoying is not recalling a word during a conversation. Makes me so sad to be getting older. ah well, that’s how it goes…
ReplyDeleteAnd AI, don’t get me started! =P
ps - sorry for your loss (of the tech kind!) yes, do keep in touch!

Right? Memory is the hardest thing to lose.
DeleteWell you got my attention on that one. What do you say--"Here's my sentence. Can you clean it up?" And which AI do you use for that?
ReplyDeleteUsually ChatGPT. I think it's the best one I've tried for writing.
DeleteI don’t use AI except when asking Google a question. I find many of the responses to be too generic to be helpful.
ReplyDeleteIt's true. It can be generic,.
DeleteLOVE this. Memory is core to what makes and keeps us human. @samanthabwriter from
ReplyDeleteBalancing Act
Yup. We change gradually over time as our recollection of things change.
DeleteI've found most of the AI suggestions for rewording a sentence to be laughably awful, so I pretty much avoid it, apart from helping with proof-reading/grammar check. Generative AI (like those pictures) uses a LOT of electricity, and often a lot of water to cool the data centers. So I avoid that entirely (not to be all negative or anything...).
ReplyDeleteIt really depends on the AI. Some are better for specific tasks. Such a learning curve...
DeleteIt does use resources, but it's not going away. That's the truth. I'm hoping they'll grow more efficient on the engineering side eventually.
I love the history T-shirt. Perfect. I haven't tried AI for more than info search, but it would be fun to see what kind of image it would come up with
ReplyDeletehttps://cleemckenziebooks.substack.com/
It's true. But it also creates some nightmare fuel, so you have to be ready for that.
DeleteHelp with a sentence would be nice. I don't even know how to research AI. Maybe I should check it out. Have a nice September!
ReplyDeleteLife, eh? Always pushing us to learn new things. LOL!
DeleteI use my one line a day journal to make sure I write down at least one grateful/positive thing that happened in the day. I usually fit in more than that but on a bad day, it's a reminder that I can usually find at least one. :)
ReplyDeleteAt least one. I stretch to 5 a day but there are some days I could go on and on and some days when it feels impossible to manage those 5.
DeleteI've started writing down what I'm thankful for too recently, and yes, it does totally change your focus. Thanks for the encouraging post!
ReplyDeleteFor sure! Gratitude is an attitude, cultivated by giving attention to the small things.
DeleteMy journal is my meditation and therapy. I don't get to it every day, but I always feel better afterwards. I also believe that gratitude is a key to happiness. :)
ReplyDeleteI love it! What a great way to focus. --And I'm with you. It's totally the key.
DeleteA grateful journal is a good way to remind ourselves that everyday, there is something good.
ReplyDeleteFor true! I especially appreciate it on the hard days, when I can go back and scan through some of the amazing things I've been blessed with.
Deletegood answer
ReplyDeleteHaha! I thought so. Also, have some cheese. ;)
DeleteI love your magic word. And I adore your t-shirt. I want one like that too.
ReplyDeleteThey're not hard to find. Shall I point one of your loved ones to an online shop? =)
DeleteCheese is a close second. ;) Love the tshirt.
ReplyDeleteWell...cheese technically is the answer, but REMEMBERING there's cheese has to come first. LOL!
DeleteI enjoyed this entire post! Love those tees ;-) Great ideas on how to be the master of your own ideas and still work with AI.
ReplyDeleteAw! Glad to hear it, Diedre. Thank you for popping in and leaving a smattering of sunshine.
DeleteI have missed you, cheese goddess. 🧀
ReplyDeleteGreat post.

I have a novelette coming out on the ninth. And a post about condiments planned on the A to Z site this month. Hope you're well!

LOL! And I've missed you. An A-Z about conduments? Now this I have to see.
DeleteI need to revisit the gratitude journal concept....
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely worth the effort.
DeleteWhen things are important to remember, I write them down. That helps me a lot. Otherwise, it too easily disappears.
ReplyDeleteBe well.
I hear you! And if I don't write them down...well, my memory isn't as awesome as it used to be. BUT THE JOURNAL KNOWS. LOL! We frequently refrence my journals to set the facts straight.
DeleteIt's always a good idea to remember what you have to be grateful for. Happiness is a choice.
ReplyDeleteSO totally ture, and so easy to forget.
DeleteI happened across a notebook that had "gratitude" written on the front, and decided to keep it to write positive things in each day. I have not been great at it, but I'm wanting to pick it up and start now!
ReplyDeleteYou write so much I'm not surprised it got a little neglected. I made it part of my evening routine or else I'd be in the same boat.
DeleteGreat idea I already bought one ages ago lol but still have to start I will get it going Love we are the stories we live True
ReplyDeleteNo better time to start than now, eh? At least, that's how I'm trying to live. Trying -- the key word here.
DeleteI love those.
ReplyDeleteThe reminders or the cheese? It must be the cheese.
DeleteYep. Good to remember indeed. I take pictures, thats my Journaling.
ReplyDeleteStill have yet to use Ai. It always seems bland with my umm craziness lol
Photo journaling is awesome. I used to be better at that...been working too much lately. Haha!
DeleteJust do me one favor: go try to generate an image. Once you see some of the insanity AI spawns, you might find yourself kindred spirits. Lol!
I love that you do five good things every day. I do one. Heh.
ReplyDeleteI also like and agree with the way you use AI.
Great post, Crystal.
One in detail is better than 5 in passing. 😁
DeleteWhen I'm trying to learn from my mistakes, some--not all, but some--tell me to let it go and forget about it. Apparently, I haven't stepped on their toes yet. When I do, I'm sure they'll change their tune. hehehe
ReplyDeleteRemembering mistakes keeps other safe. ;-)
It does indeed, but also helps us appreciate the parts of life that are the opposite of mistakes.
DeleteLearning from our mistakes. If only we could ALL learn from our mistakes. Alas, we are human. Unlike AI. You make some solid points here on how to allow AI to be a tool to help writers. Stay strong, dear friend!
ReplyDeleteLikewise!
DeleteI think we usually learn from our mistakes... eventually. It's just a question of how many times we have to repeat them before wising up.
