The Magic Word: And It's Not Please (Plus IWSG)

Or abracadabra!

Or wha-la!

Or thank you.

It's not even cheese. *gasp*

(But it does make things better. Here, have some while we chat.)

What is this magical word that makes everything awesome?

Yup. That's the one.

“The past is behind, learn from it. The future is ahead, prepare for it. The present is here, live it.” -- Thomas S. Monson

My favorite t-shirt reads:

True principle--whether in our personal lives, the countries we live in, the homes we have established. This is why I keep a journal--trying to reinforce memories so I won't make the same mistakes again and again.

At the same time, keeping good memories close--the ones that build us up, that encourage us, that fill our hearts with joy, this is the KEY to happiness. On top of a journal, I like to keep a gratitude journal. Every day I list a minimum of 5 things I'm grateful for. This practice ensures I review the day for the best parts and focus on the things that bring me peace, happiness, even pain followed by resolution.

So is this concept magic? Remembering? Yup. Totally. 100%.

Let's reinforce AWESOME memories, holding onto the ones that shape us, and aiming to create a history we can be proud of.

The awesome co-hosts for the September 3 posting of the IWSG are Kim Lajevardi, Natalie Aguirre, Nancy Gideon, and Diedre Knight!

September 3 question: What are your thoughts on using AI, such as GPChat, Raptor, and others with your writing? Would you use it for research, storybible, or creating outlines\beats?

Here's where I admit I use it. Not for outlining. Not for story bible. I like AI for inspirational image generation, research assistance, and when my brain occasionally struggles with rephrasing a sentence, I really LOVE getting a few suggestions. (Normally, I'd go to a critique partner for this.)

What about you? Do you use AI regularly? What for? And how do you keep your memories?

  1. It is good for those things, suggestions that we can make better.
And why focus on bad stuff? Give it to God. He can handle it much better.

    1. 100%. Life is too short to get caught on the sad/hard stuff.

  2. I journal too. Though many people only write the bad things in there, I always find time to write the good. And ofc, photographs are great to keep memories:)

    Have a great September!

  3. It sounds like you have good ways to use Al as a tool. I practice gratitude too, though I don't write it in a journal. It's really helped me feel better about my life since Rudy died.

  4. I read a book years ago called Writing as a Way of Healing, that talked about how to use journaling and other kinds of writing as a type of therapy. I've gone back to it many times and it can really help.
Thank you! I've been blabbering about this all morning, but you phrased it the way the way I've been trying to: AI can be used a critique partner, or writing partner. I've used it that way myself and it's wonderful. It's great if you have a real person, but that's not always an option.

    1. Yes! My journal is definitely a way to explore thoughts and feelings in a healthy way.

It's true, when in a pinch, AI will work for feedback.

  5. You can even ask it craft advice (ex: 'List ways to make a villain in a novel more multidimensional'). It will give you general suggestions that you can adapt to your story.

Love the shirt! I want one, too.
Thanks for visiting my blog. :)

  6. One of the worst things about getting older is not being able to Remember… I forget where I put things, then I forget what I was looking for. =D I must write everything down or you can fugetaboutit! But most annoying is not recalling a word during a conversation. Makes me so sad to be getting older. ah well, that’s how it goes…

And AI, don’t get me started! =P
ps - sorry for your loss (of the tech kind!) yes, do keep in touch!

  7. Well you got my attention on that one. What do you say--"Here's my sentence. Can you clean it up?" And which AI do you use for that?

    1. Usually ChatGPT. I think it's the best one I've tried for writing.

  8. I don’t use AI except when asking Google a question. I find many of the responses to be too generic to be helpful.

    1. Yup. We change gradually over time as our recollection of things change.

  10. I've found most of the AI suggestions for rewording a sentence to be laughably awful, so I pretty much avoid it, apart from helping with proof-reading/grammar check. Generative AI (like those pictures) uses a LOT of electricity, and often a lot of water to cool the data centers. So I avoid that entirely (not to be all negative or anything...).

    1. It really depends on the AI. Some are better for specific tasks. Such a learning curve...

It does use resources, but it's not going away. That's the truth. I'm hoping they'll grow more efficient on the engineering side eventually.

  11. I love the history T-shirt. Perfect. I haven't tried AI for more than info search, but it would be fun to see what kind of image it would come up with

  13. I use my one line a day journal to make sure I write down at least one grateful/positive thing that happened in the day. I usually fit in more than that but on a bad day, it's a reminder that I can usually find at least one. :)

    1. At least one. I stretch to 5 a day but there are some days I could go on and on and some days when it feels impossible to manage those 5.
