Writerly Wednesday

Last week Sharon Johnston shared two truths and one lie about herself and those who guessed the lie correctly were entered into a random drawing to win a copy of her awesome book, Sleeper.

The options were:

1. When she was young, Sharon was convinced she was adopted because she looked so different from the rest of her family.
2. She herded an echidna across the road.
3. She played a nun in The Sound of Music for her school play.

And the lie is:

#3. She actually played Leisel, not a nun. Ooh, tricky, tricky!

The winner is...

Congrats winners! And now, I'm off on a writing retreat. I'll be back next Monday after my brain has been sufficiently drained of all writerly awesomeness to bestow awards and pretend at being human.

If you could go anywhere to just relax and create, where would you go?

ISWG and Writerly Wednesday

Are you ready to win a book and test your lie detecting skills? It's time for Writerly Wednesday!

Writerly Wednesdays here are for readers and writers. Get to know authors, test your human lie detector skills, and WIN books.

But first...

Publishing has been a LONG journey for me, and as excited as I am about this step, I'm also apprehensive about what it means for the future. I have a young family. We home school. Will I be able to devote adequate time to all my priorities--but most especially to my littles? While these apprehensions are a constant pressure at the back of my mind, all the amazing reviews, emails and feedback fill me with immeasurable joy and leave me wondering why I took so long to get here. Life is a constant balancing game, eh?

Okay, who's ready for the winner of last week's game? Erin Albert shared two truths and one lie about herself and those who guessed the lie correctly were entered into a random drawing to win a copy of her awesome book, The Prophecy.

The options were:

1. Erin had a male dog named Lassie who got eaten by an alligator.
2. In college she played a male character (actually a female character pretending to be a male), and a girl hit on her thinking she was a real boy.
3. She was asked to consider being Gertie from ET for a possible sequel when she was a little girl, but refused because she's terrified of ET.

And the lie is:

#1. She didn't have a dog eaten by a gator, but her cousin did. Yikes! I'm that much more afraid of standing water here in Florida now.

Way to guess those of you who got it right! You are officially human lie detectors. And the is:

...DRUM ROLL...

Congrats, Sherry!

And now for this week's special feature. In 2012, I entered the Pitch Wars contest hosted by the fabulous Brenda Drake. I didn't expect anything to come of it, but OH was I surprised! Sharon Johnston had a fistfight with another writing coach to take on my book, and she not only helped me find the RIGHT title, but whipped Moonless into shape. She's amazing, and I feel honored and lucky to be able to share her BRAND SPANKIN NEW book with you today.

A new heart should mean new life, not a living nightmare.

Mishca Richardson’s life is at an all-time high after her heart transplant.  With new boyfriend, Ryder, the two of them have the perfect summer romance. Even the nightmares that have been plaguing her sleep since her operation can’t dull the high she’s on.

Things start to unravel as Mishca develops superhuman abilities. She does her best to hide them so as not to end up a science experiment in a lab. But she can’t ignore the instant attraction she experiences when she meets her university professor, Colin Reed.

Torn between the blossoming love and the obsession, Mishca must decide if she wants Ryder or Colin. But the organization responsible for her changes and her connection to Colin, is moving to secure Mishca for himself so that she can be the weapon he always intended her to be. If Mishca can’t resist her programming she’ll have a lot more to worry about than romance.

This NA Speculative Fiction is already on my kindle. Buy it HERE, or add it on Goodreads.

Ready to meet Sharon?
Sharon is a writer from Mackay in Queensland, Australia who has short stories published in anthologies and was also runner-up in the Australian Literary Review's Young Adult short story contest with KARMA. Her debut novel SLEEPER is now out.

By day she is a public relations executive and by night she writes weird fiction and soulful contemporaries while her husband, two sons and cat are fast asleep.

She can be found eating smoked Danish cheese while lounging at the pool.

Sharon gave me two truths and one lie to test your "lie detector" skills. Can you figure out the lie? Those who do will go into my magic hat for a chance to win a copy of her book. Eek! How cool is that? You have until Tuesday, December 10th at 1 p.m. EDT to guess--and be sure to come back for the answer on December 12th.

TRUTH OR LIE

1. When she was young, Sharon was convinced she was adopted because she looked so different from the rest of her family.
2. She herded an echidna across the road.
3. She played a nun in The Sound of Music for her school play.

Okay, which is the lie? And writers, how do you keep a balance?

The Other Side of the Line

You never know what's coming right around the bend.

For those of you who are working on a goal you're afraid will never pan out, I hope this strikes home. Today I read a post from an author who just got signed with her literary agent. She spoke about months and months of putting her stuff out there and receiving either no or little feedback--most of it terribly demoralizing. Then, suddenly she got "the email." (Followed by a phone call.) An agent had her manuscript nine months before offering representation.

The author marveled at how close she'd been the entire time and pointed out that the line between endless (nightmarish) querying and success is so thin.

I'm hoping for myself that holds true. Some of you may recall me ranting about Pitch Wars a month ago. Well, it's finally over. I placed second (out of 600 original entries) receiving only 1 less request than the winner. My FULL manuscript was requested by 7 agents--7 DIFFERENT literary agents. The very next day #pitmad took place, and my coach from Pitch Wars was out there tweeting my pitch. (Sharon, you are amazing!) She dragged me out of my hiding place and between the both of us, we landed 3 more requests.

Now the hard part: waiting. I've sent out my manuscript, and while it's burning the inbox or "to read" folder of agents, I'll be penning out the draft of another book.

It only takes one "yes", one to light the world on fire. I'm encouraged by the reminder that the line is so thin. One brave step stands between me and the other side of the line.

What are you working on now? What are your goals and hopes? How are you holding up?

Bing, Bang, Boom

And no, I'm not just practicing onamonapia.

The fingers drum anxiously across the desk. Waiting. Waiting. Not waiting well.

In three days the results will be announced for Brenda Drake's Pitch Wars. The amazing Sharon Johnston and I are teamed up against a slew of others to see who can bring a panel of literary agents to their knees--with requests, that is. This is round two, the final sha-bang, and I can't decide if I want to hide my head in the sand or click the refresh button every two seconds.

How do you deal with the waiting? Me, I turn to distraction. So here are my distractions today.

I'm joining Sheri Larsen--an amazing blogger/writing friend with her New Year's Writer's Creed. Everyone needs to redefine their plan on occasion.
(See, it's even on my side bar!)

Finally, the BOOM! The free copy of Deadly Kisses by Kerri Cuevas goes to...

DRUM ROLL...

Pitch Wars, Writers, and WINNERS... Oh my!

You know when you do something spur of the moment that ends with you pulling your hair and laughing manically? Yup.

On November 26th Brenda Drake posted a contest called Pitch Wars. It's all about creating the ultimate hook, or pitch for a book. Thirty-seven coaches (agented/published writers/editor/industry pros) put themselves out there and asked for unagented/unpublished writers to pitch their completed manuscripts to them. 591 writers answered the call. Each writer could select 3 coaches to pitch. Each coach selected 3 manuscripts to champion--one pick, and two alternates (in case their first choice falls through). These coaches will work with their writers to strengthen their pitches for a final round (January 23-24), when all the teams will pitch their manuscripts to a panel of 16 judges/literary agents. The winner will be the person who receives the most requests for their book.

I saw the contest and thought, "Hey, I have all the requirements and I've been querying. Why not?" So I vetted out the coaches, picked the three most stellar ones (for my genre), and tossed a few pages at them.

Response #1: "I really enjoyed reading the material you sent me for DARK MOON. ... you have a really great story here ..." But ultimately, she went with other manuscripts.

Response #2: "You made it into my top ten (out of a LOT of submissions) ... For what you are writing, you do it very, very well. ... I am assuming this will be snapped up quickly..." But again, she passed, offering to help if I don't find this baby a home immediately.

Response #3: "I can't gush enough about your pitch. ...we can wipe the floor with everyone at Pitch Wars then celebrate with Cheese!"

I GOT PICKED!!

Was I surprised? Um, more like dumb-struck. So here's my wonderful teammate who is currently bulldozing through DARK MOON so we can pitch it, and wipe the floor with our competition. (Which we will.)

Meet Sharon: a writer of YA and NA weird fiction and contemporary fiction, a blogger at YAtopia, Writing Teen Novels, Down Under Wonderings, a regular speaker at The Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival, and a NA/YA intern for Entangled. She has a habit of posting weird profile pics and has been stalked by women because of her great taste in shoes.

Together we are the Grimm Writers, and although I never could have anticipated being picked, I couldn't have a better partner. Sharon is AWESOME!

So I guess the moral of the story is, you can't be a winner without trying. Take a chance. Do crazy things. Jump before you look. You never know what will happen.
