Goals, Gatling Guns, and IWSG

Happy New Year!!!

Are you having the most fabulous 2015 so far?

Quick intro for any new friends here... I'm a total book nerd who dabbles with writing for theater, novels, poetry, short stories, flash fiction, lyrics and orchestral compositions. I LIVE on cheese, home school 3 kids (shortly to be 4) and answer to the title of "Chicken" with pride. Two of my book babies are out in the world, and I've contributed to several story compilations (see the Books section). Today I'm ravishing an orange, counting baby kicks, and desperately trying to remember what it was I wanted to say. (Ah, pregnancy brain...)

Really, it was something like this:

The beginning of the year is such a fabulous time--a time to look at our lives, reevaluate what is working and what isn't. As I've reflected, I've been missing how I used to run this blog: 3 posts a week, deep thoughts on Monday, Writerly stuff on Wednesdays, Funnies on Friday. I've also missed how I used to spend a minimum of 2 hours a day writing. Alas, life doesn't stand still for blogging. (Or maybe I should say the 3 kids and 1 on the way.)

With limited energy/time I'm finding I can't handle the precision of one of these:

I need the precision of one of these:

Now a sniper rifle requires patience, setting up exactly the right shot, breathing correctly and pulling the trigger with a steady hand. Much of what goes on is in silence, behind closed doors, whereas the Gatling allows for all out warfare, spur of the moment.

Do you see what I'm saying?

My goal this year is to welcome a new life into the world and follow a very precise calendar of specific deadlines to make sure my next novel makes its debut on time. (Hah!) Wish me luck. My other goal is to form a deep and positive mental dialog about everything--and I do mean everything. You get a TON further on positive mental vibes.

What are your new goals this year?

Now, on to the fun and games!

Last month Suzy shared LOOKING FOR LUCY JO with us, along with two lies and one truth. Those who guessed the truth correctly were entered into a random drawing for the chance to win an eBook

Suzy's game:

1. Suzy once sat next to Robert Pattinson on a train ride from London to Bath. He was super cool and chatted for a while before he was distracted by a much younger lady with bright blue hair and a tattoo on her wrist that read Stamus Contra Malum.
2. She celebrated her birthday one year with Kiki Dee - you might remember her from the 60's? She was particularly famous for singing Don't Go Breaking My Heart with Elton John.
3. She has a belly button piercing. (Yes, it hurt!)

And the lie is:

#1. Suzy didn't meet Robert Pattinson, but wouldn't that make for a fun story if she actually had?

And the winner is:

...DRUM ROLL...

Congrats Susan!

And now to today's feature...

Sugar’s not so sweet and secrets can be deadly …
especially with matters of the heart

Sienna’s bestie, Harper warned her not to intern for famous bad boy artist, Casper Mason. After all, he just fired Harper who helped Sienna get the interview. But the moment Sienna sees Casper—or Caz—sweaty and practically shirtless and swinging from chains while he works on his sculpture, she’s hooked. He’s the richest, hottest artist in New York, and he lives in the fabulous Williamsburg Sugar Factory. But he’s also an incorrigible game-player, who seems to relish testing Sienna’s loyalty with a string of unsettling tests.

She knows she should get away fast. But by the time Sienna sneaks into his locked storage room and begins to unearth his dark and terrifying secret, she’s fallen way too hard for the handsome, charismatic Caz.

Kitsy Clare lives in Manhattan. A romantic at heart, she loves writing about the sexy intrigue of the city and of the art world. She knows it well, having shown her paintings here before turning to writing. Her new adult Art of Love series - Model Position and Private Internship - is all about artist Sienna and her friends. Living in a Bookworld says: “Beautifully written! We learn things about art & painting. Colorful stories from a promising NA author.” The books can be read in any order.

She also writes award-winning YA as Catherine Stine. Novels include futuristic thrillers, Ruby’s Fire and Fireseed One. Her YA horror, Dorianna, a twist on Dorian Gray for the Internet age, just won Best Horror Novel in the 2014 Kindle Hub Book awards.
Kitsy (aka Catherine) gave me two truths and one lie to test your "lie detector" skills. Those who figure out the lie will go into my magic hat for the chance to win an eBook of PRIVATE INTERNSHIP. How awesome is that?

You have until Tuesday, January 13 at 1 p.m. EDT to guess. Be sure to come back for the answer on January 14.

TRUTH OR LIE

1. She had a lively discussion with Blues musician Buddy Guy, where he talked about getting musical inspiration from listening to rain on his tin roof.
2. She hung out with Marilyn Manson at one of his after-parties and munched on black marshmallows.
3. She met all of the 2014 top ten Idol singers and took selfies backstage after the concert.
So which is the lie? What are you prioritizing for this new year? Have you build a plan with deadlines? What did you do to celebrate the holidays?

  1. I like your idea of positivity. It does make the world a brighter place. My main goal this year is to get my book out there, hopefully, next month. Best of luck with reaching your goals and with bundle of joy #4!

  2. Crystal! I've missed your posts! I can barely function with no coffee brain, so I can't even imagine pregnancy brain...Good luck with sticking to your deadlines.

  3. Best of luck with your deadlines! I'm sure you're going to rock them, with a cherry-shaped cheeseball on top. Here's to wishing you a lot of mental processing power as the baby is kicking around.

  4. So excited for you and your new addition to your family! I understand the hectic lifestyle of parenting and trying to be a writer. Unbelievably difficult some days. That book sounds wonderful! I'm guessing the lie is #3.

  6. Those are great goals! I have four kids, too, and sometimes a set writing schedule is essential to find time to get those words down.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Positive thinking is the way to go. I decided to use more of it this year too. Negativity only takes you so far. Wishing you and the baby well.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Love the idea of the positive mental dialogue! And think how wonderful for your kids to grow up around someone so positive and passionate about life and writing. :)

  9. Wow, no idea on the lie. The third one?
Good goals, Crystal! Although don't be discouraged if child number four messes any of those up.

  10. Like you, I've not been blogging as I have done in the past and I find I miss it. I can't blame 3 kids and one on the way. My youngest is 19, yay! But I did home school him for part of his school life and yes, it takes a lot of attention and time.

My goals are to simplify my life and get back into my pre-yucky year of unfortunate events. Get back to my blogging and focus more on my creative writing.

  11. Good luck with your new arrival and all of your writing endeavours. I remember how hard it was to write when I had a baby, and he's my only one so far; you're a hero! I hope 2015 brings what you want, but remember, if you don't hit those deadlines, you have a very good (and beautiful) excuse!

  31. My guess is the lie is #1.

I know I should make to-do lists with specific goals for certain days, but I've always resisted it. The low-key, fly by the seat of one's pants gene comes from my maternal grandmother, but skipped my mother.

  32. So much to look forward to this year. It's going to be a busy one but I hope a happy and positive one with lots of cheese!

  35. Hi Crystal .. you've got loads going on .. does the baby come with extra cheese?! Sounds like you're coping really well ... and just have a fun year with #4 ... and write when and where you can ...

Catherine is one talented lady .. artist, writer and general mixer in high places ... I'd say #3 is the lie ... but her YA horror Dorianna .. does sound a good read - cheers to you both - Hilary

  36. Crystal, your goals are fabulous! Especially the one about bringing your precious baby into this world. Best of luck to you with your upcoming novel. I can't wait! :)

  38. Congrats on your pregnancy! I wish you and your family all the best.

  39. You are terrifying me with your knowledge of sniper rifles.

I'm gonna guess #2 is the lie, though I want them all to be true - because they're all awesome.

I believe the lie is #2. I've never seen black marshmallows.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Happy new Year! Love the positive thoughts goal--such a good one :)

And I'm going to go with #3 for the lie, mainly because I hope the other two are true and I can ask Kisty/Catherine about them!

  46. Hi, Crystal!

Sounds like you are all ready for the new year and all its wonders! Congrats on you next baby.... how exciting! You life is full of love, laughter, and BUSINESS! But that is ALL GOOD!

All the best for 2015! Wishing you every happiness!

  47. Hi, Kitsy,

Really like the premise of your newest book! I am from NYC and went to art school there, modeled, there and wrote a bit there. SO I am very intrigued to read YOUR story. It will be just like being home!

    All the best...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hmm... You're making a calendar, and I'm throwing mine out.

Just for the record, "alright," though it has some acceptance in common usage (emails, texting, etc.), is considered a misspelling in formal usage (novels, reports, articles). "Alright" is always incorrect in a published manuscript. Period.
Only -amateur- English circles consider the word acceptable.
(And, yes, I did the research.)

  49. Congratulations on the pregnancy! And it's okay that you can't blog as often as before, especially because you have your new baby as well as your other kids to take care of.
This year I'm prioritizing my dissertation; I'm even putting my novel on the back burner so that I can focus on finishing this book that hardly anyone will ever read, so that I can finally finish my PhD and be FREE.

  50. Homeschooling three kids and a new baby on the way. I'm so impressed with what you've accomplished.

LOL! That's a tough one. Happy New Years to you as well, my friend!! So excited for you and your little jelly bean. Lots of friends are starting their families this year and I couldn't be more happy and elated to be an "aunt" to all of them. I have my cats for now, and that's enough work as it is. LOL We'll see what the new year brings. ;)

Sending you lots of love and cheese.

  55. Wow! A new child! How wonderful for you and congratulations. 56. Somehow the talk about kids, babies, oranges, and orchestral works didn't prepare me for the guns. I must admit, the metaphor works and is definitely something a pregnant brain would come up with - pregnant woman aren't to be messed with.

I wish you luck with all your endeavors, especially the one growing in your tummy. :)

  98. So in other words, it sounds like everything is going awesaome for you:) We've got baby #2 coming in May, so you'll have to let me know sometime how it all works out with 3+ kids, and being a writer. Now that's an accomplishment:)

    ReplyDelete
  99. Happy New Year to you too!

I need a nuclear missile in 2015 to hit all my goals. I tend to overreach, but then again, I'm built that way. Gotta stretch myself.

  102. My goal for the new year is to read 100 new books while still getting into better shape than I currently am. The 100 books should be easy lol. Hope your holidays were amazing I spent mine spoiling my first nephew. If I get into better shape it will be chasing him. Matt @ JC's Book Haven.

I commend you for the astonishing 100 book goal. It's so inspiring and I hope to come to even half that number by the end of this new year. LOL Thank goodness for Goodreads. I feel like I can actually keep track! <3
