I Believe in Awesomeness: Are you a character?

So I was going to write this awesome blogpost about following your dreams and believing in yourself. I ran to youtube searching for this great quote from Serenity (one of the goram best movies of all time), and instead I found this:

And I'm left remembering WHY I love Firefly/Serenity. It's all about the characters.
Jayne Cobb is a character through and through. At first I hated him. I really thought he was the weak point of the party. As I got more invested he became my favorite. I mean, Jayne is Jayne. Period. He may not be the brightest but he doesn't apologize, he doesn't back down, and he holds to a standard of principals--although who really knows what they are or how low they go.

I think the same can be said of any great character. We love them when they are who they are, solid and flawed.

Ready to get philosophical?

So what about ourselves? Are we willing to be bold and flawed--and can we come away still loving ourselves? I say that in reference to writing for myself, but whatever you do in life are you willing to take chances, make messes, and occasionally fail?

What hat are you wearing? Do you wear it as proudly as Jayne?

  1. Woo-hoo! I love getting philosophical! My most honest answer to your question is...I'm working on it. I WANT to be willing to be bold and flawed and still come away loving myself. I WANT to be willing to take chances, make messes and fail. While I'm not quite there yet, I find I am getting slightly better at fighting the fear every step of the way and I'm continuing to work on getting stronger. It is my fondest hope that one day, I will be able to answer your question with a resounding "yes"! :-)

  2. I love Jayne, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. But I love the parallel you draw even more. I think so many people do spend too much time apologizing for who they are, instead of embracing their flaws and making them strengths at the same time. (myself included, definitely). I still don't think I could wear that hat unless it was on a dare, though ;-)

  4. I've never watched Firefly. You're like the fiftieth person to recommend it...I suppose I should Netflix it!
As for your question, I don't think any of us starts off thinking we'll fail. But because we're flawed, we make mistakes a long the way. It's acknowledging our shortcomings, improving them, and believing in ourselves, despite our flaws, that make us stronger. If we don't try, how will we know if we can succeed? AWESOME post.

  5. I'm not nearly as accepting of my flaws as other people are of them, thanks goodness. :)

  6. I haven't seen Firefly, either. :P

I've been known to dwell on flaws--probably for too long. But I still try to wear the hat (so to speak) as well as I can, and do as much as I can in the process. :)

  7. Great post!

I'm much more accepting of other people's flaws than my own! Maybe that's a good thing...

  8. Okay, I'm just going to say it: if you haven't seen Firefly, do it! DO IT NOW! Oh, but I suggest starting out with Serenity--the movie made from the series.

  9. I haven't seen Firefly yet. I think I will check it out. I think I'm more accepting of people's flaws than my own like most people. :)

  10. I can be pretty forgiving of myself in hindsight, and with others when they see a mistake. But when people continue in their folly, I tend to keep themat an arm's legnth.

  11. People would be boring without flaws. Perfect might sound great in theory, but people don't really want perfect. They want someone relatable. And perfect is not at all relatable.
