Log Line: Alexia must choose safety and an arranged marriage, or
true love and being hunted by the Soulless every moonless night.
Short Description: Jane Eyre meets Supernatural.
Alexia’s nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.
Long Description: In the English society of 1768 where women are bred to
marry, unattractive Alexia, just sixteen, believes she will end up alone. But
on the county doorstep of a neighbor’s estate, she meets a man straight out of
her nightmares, one whose blue eyes threaten to consume her whole
world—especially when she discovers him standing over her murdered host
in the middle of the night.
Among the many things to change
for her that evening are: her physical appearance—from ghastly to breathtaking,
an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man’s
unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede
tragedies, but they’re echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths
on moonless nights.
Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or
protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been concealing:
truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. After
an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old
life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold
into a loveless marriage, or escape with the man of her dreams and risk
becoming one of the Soulless.

MOONLESS Print Book Blogfest
Excerpts from MOONLESS:
Alexia lowered her eyelids to keep him from witnessing the
forming tears.
Kiren stepped nearer, tucked a hand up under her jaw, and
pressed his lips to her brow. Warmth radiated from the connection. She accepted
it, trying to be grateful for the simple reassurance that—despite his
reluctance toward romance—he did care for and would protect her, even from
himself.
He sucked in a breath through his nose, and forced her chin
upward. His lips crashed down over hers.
Shockwaves rolled through her, her knees going limp. His
arm slipped around her back, pressing her to him. His fingers tugged through
her hair. She surrendered entirely to the cataclysmic torrent tearing through
her body.
The
only things that existed were he, she, and the storm ripping through them. She
clung to him. The only reality was this—this incredible connection. She wanted
him, and nothing else. She wanted this, and nothing more. She wanted him, and
he wanted her!
He pushed her back, holding her arms against her sides.
Panting.
Eyes closed.
She reached for him.
He grimaced, released her, and stepped into the shadows,
vanishing.
“Is someone there?” she breathed, little
more than a whisper.
Wheezing gurgles met her ears. She spun.
Nothing.
What kind of creature made noise like that? Had she
imagined it as well?
She swallowed. The swift thump of her heart echoed into her
ears. “Hello?”
A snicker rippled in a circle about her. She twisted to
follow it, catching snatches of something—something moving, fast.
A growl.
She dashed headlong the way she’d
come.
Movement erupted behind her.
Her skirts caught on the underbrush. They snagged and tore,
twigs scratching her legs. She ran harder, one arm before her face to fend off
the branches. They raked across her sleeve. She gasped as they cut into her
flesh.
Alexia’s feet thudded the ground in rhythm, echoed by
another distant set—faster ones.
Chest heaving, she sucked in air, but could not draw
enough. Invisible fingers squeezed at her airways. Her lungs pulsed like
she was being dragged under a great watery swell. The whoosh of leaves turned
her head as an upright silhouette crashed through her periphery. Blackness
blinked at the corners of her vision. Her muscles burned.
She would faint before she could outrun her pursuer!
She gulped in air. Perspiration chilled her skin. The rasp
of her own breathing filled her ears.
“Help!” she screeched. Father would find her. He’d track
her. “Father! Anyone!” But she’d gone miles. Even if he’d begun looking, she’d
wandered too far.
A bough slapped her across the face. White light flashed.
She blinked it away, uncertain whether her legs were still under her.
She couldn’t outrun this thing. No one would hear her, but
she screamed anyway. “Help me!”
It was an empty plea.
Weight pummeled into her back. She flew forward as the
ground rushed up.
“You know I worry about you, Alexia.”
Yes, she knew it. He feared he’d raised a child too
intelligent to settle on some dim-witted and wealthy noble.
“When Sarah was your age—”
“You had her promised to a fifty-one year old man.” Crossing
her arms, she scowled.
“That is right.” He blinked back at her and cleared this
throat.
She didn’t do him the justice of disbanding her anger. This
was the one day she might actually get away with being willful.
He shifted in his seat. “Someone approached me near your
last birthday with a proposal of marriage.”
Alexia blinked. “For
me? Was he mistaken?”
“He is a wealthy countryman from the North, older,
intellectual, a good match.”
“How much older?” Smoothing the folds of her napkin, she
held her breath.
He shrugged. “Enough. I was sorely tempted to accept his
offer, and I would have if . . .”
She shuddered. If she hadn’t changed.
His head shook. “You have your pick of suitors, but I do
expect you to make a choice before your next birthday.”
Her jaw tumbled.
He grinned, bumping her chin up with a knuckle. “Some young
man will be very lucky to acquire you.”
She moaned.
“Do not start,” he purred. “You shall be happy—or I’ll not
let you go.” His boyish dimple had surfaced. He meant it.
“I know.” She smiled back.
“One year, or I will accept that generous proposal on your
behalf.”
“But—”
“One year.”
A body dangled from the rafters, several inches above the
dirt floor.
Alexia’s scream froze in her throat.
Soft honeydew tresses spilled loosely over thin shoulders,
the child’s eyes heavily-lashed and downturned. Her cheeks were blotched, wide,
and white, contrasting with vibrant crimson lips. Scarlet skirts hung about the
girl, like the bleeding petals of a rose, still as death.
Alexia swallowed. A child. She couldn’t be more than
thirteen. Great wide irons looped her wrists, cutting wicked lines in the little
one’s skin.
It wasn’t right. Disgust bubbled through her chest. She
covered her mouth and hurried down the steps, anxious to rescue the body, or at
least lay it to rest.
The girl’s eyes turned up. Brown, chocolate, swirling.
Alexia tumbled back. She thunked into the stairs and landed
on her rump. Hard. She sucked in a breath. The little face watched her,
expressionless, innocent, beautiful. Her stomach twisted. No one should be that
perfect—not even in death.
“There’s an old legend ‘bout these parts.” Their host sat
his tired body down on a stool. “Dangers in the moonless night what’d make you
shake in your skin.” He indicated the empty chairs across from himself and they
took them willingly. “It’s said a hundred years back a wil-o’-the-wisp passed
this way.”
“Like a faerie?” Alexia suggested.
“Oh sure,” he nodded, “only stronger. It liked our little
town and settled down here. It aided people’s harvest, blessed our children
with health, kept the cattle, stayed the plague.” He shifted. “A doctor on
the hill housed the creature, fed it, took care of it and did its bidding on
our behalf. Then one day he disappeared—he and his whole family.” He looked
Alexia right in the eye. “A plague started upon us, things what appear on
moonless nights and stealed away our children. There weren’t no more helps of a
miraculous nature. Ones like this,” he pointed to the youth who’d saved them,
“started popping up instead of the healthy pretty ones. No offense, lad.” The
young man smiled a toothy grin. “It’s said the old man insulted the creature
and earned its wrath. We been dealin’ with it ever since. Bein’ left to wander
outdoors on a night such as this is as much a death sentence as hangin’.”
Kiren extended a hand to help her up, and she took it. Her
feet were instantly below her—so quickly that she stumbled and landed against
his solid form. An arm rounded her back tenderly, her legs threatening to give
at the elation of his touch.
He turned in the direction of the house, pulling her forward
with him, moving out of the garden and up to solid brick walls. They halted at
a window, the study window. Father sat within, gazing at the portrait of
Dana, fingers tracing the details.
“He gave her up.” Her attention snapped back to her
breathtaking captor, inhaling his oaken tang. “He could have kept her for his
own, and he gave her up.”
His eyes met hers. The azure depths broke in a myriad of
lighter flecks, like stars reflected in an ocean tide. They consumed her,
igniting a fire within her breast—an irrational hunger for the tremor in his
arm against her back, the heat of his side against hers, the feel of his hand
vacillating ever so slightly...
He released her and took a few steps back. “You need to go
now.”
Kiren unlatched the balcony door with a thin metal hook and
slipped inside. He refastened the catch, gut twisting at the moonless
sky beyond the glass. How long would his luck hold?
Alexia lay on her back, one arm lost in her mass of dark
hair, the other tucked across her chest. A foot dangled off the edge of the
mattress, tempting him to slip it back beneath her blanket.
He grinned, envying her carefree abandon. Her latest read
lay on the bed beside an extinguished candle. He lifted it. Fanciful words
danced back at him. They too made him smile. She wanted adventure. He could
supply that.
His eyes landed on the card he’d given her father and his
smirk died. It had been shredded and reconstructed. His chest tightened. “Oh Alexia...”
The study door stood closed. She neared, shaking. Pressing
cautiously against it, she expected the mahogany to burn her.
Father’s voice boomed through the wood. “No! And that is
final!”
The barrier lurched. She leapt back as it swung open.
He halted before her. Boots, not stylish, but entirely
practical and worn; breeches, a sturdy gray, modestly hugging a trim form;
waist coat concealed by a subtly weathered coat; shirt, fitted and simple...
Her jaw fell.
Ginger locks framed his clean-shaven face with a straight
nose, high cheekbones, expressive brows and enigmatic blue eyes. He was a perfect paramour of twenty years, except for
a jagged white scar cutting from below one eye down his cheek. A sheen of beauty
hung over his whole being. He verily glowed.
Like Bellezza. Like herself!
She gasped. Sweet pollen and rustic oak tickled her nose,
transporting her to a grove of wooded mystery so deep mankind would never
comprehend the fullness. Those consuming eyes met hers and flickers of heat
burst in her cheeks, spreading across the back of her neck. His pupils widened,
nearly eclipsing the night sky. She wanted to reach out and touch him,
to fall into the blackness of his gaze.
A grunt from the den brought her back to the hall.
He bowed, movements excruciatingly slow, eyes never leaving
her face. His lips parted as if he might speak, but with a dark glance toward
the room he’d abandoned, his mouth sealed in a grim line. The corners of his
eyes crinkled, pain glinting in his hypnotic stare. He nodded and stepped
around her.
A breath of fresh-cut tinder and summer blooms pulled
her eyelids closed, like the farewell kiss of a faerie nightmare.
